When to Take a Pregnancy Test
Timing your pregnancy test correctly can help you avoid false negatives and get accurate results.
Home pregnancy tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in urine. This hormone is produced after a fertilized egg implants in the uterine wall, typically 6–12 days after ovulation.
Best Time to Test
For the most accurate result, wait until at least the first day of your missed period. Testing too early can result in a false negative because hCG levels may not yet be detectable.
Morning vs. Evening
First morning urine is most concentrated, giving you the best chance of detecting low hCG levels in early pregnancy.
If the Result Is Negative
If you get a negative result but still miss your period, retest in 2–3 days. hCG levels double approximately every 48–72 hours in early pregnancy.
