Sleep Tips for New Parents
Practical strategies to maximize rest when caring for a newborn who wakes every few hours.

Newborns sleep 16β17 hours per day β but in short bursts of 2β4 hours. Here is how to cope.
Survival Strategies
- Sleep when baby sleeps: Ignore the dishes. Rest is medicine.
- Share night duties: If possible, alternate feedings with a partner
- Keep nighttime calm: Low lights, minimal stimulation, quiet voices
- Accept imperfection: The house will be messy. That is okay.
Safe Sleep for Baby
- Always place baby on their back
- Use a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet
- Keep the crib free of blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals
- Room-sharing (not bed-sharing) is recommended for the first 6 months
When to Ask for Help
If sleep deprivation is affecting your ability to function safely, ask for help. Family, friends, postpartum doulas, and your healthcare provider are all resources.
