Postpartum Recovery: What to Expect Week by Week
Your body needs time to heal after birth. Here is a realistic timeline for physical recovery.

Recovery after childbirth is a gradual process. Be patient with yourself and accept help when offered.
Week 1
- Uterine cramping as it shrinks back to size
- Vaginal bleeding (lochia) β heavy at first, similar to a heavy period
- Soreness at delivery site (perineum or incision)
- Breast engorgement as milk comes in
Weeks 2β3
- Bleeding transitions from red to pink to brown
- Stitches (if any) begin dissolving
- Energy slowly returns but fatigue remains significant
Weeks 4β6
- Most women have their postpartum checkup
- Light exercise may be cleared by your provider
- Bleeding typically stops
- Emotional adjustment continues
Months 2β6
- Core and pelvic floor strength gradually returns
- Hair loss may occur (temporary, hormonal)
- Menstruation may return (timing varies with breastfeeding)
C-section recovery typically takes 6β8 weeks before returning to normal activities.
