Breastfeeding Basics: Getting Started

Practical tips for new mothers beginning their breastfeeding journey, from latch to supply concerns.

Breastfeeding Basics: Getting Started

Breastfeeding is natural but not always intuitive. Most mothers and babies need time to learn together.

Getting a Good Latch

  1. Hold baby close, tummy to tummy
  2. Support your breast with a C-hold
  3. Wait for baby to open wide, then bring baby to breast
  4. Baby's mouth should cover most of the areola, not just the nipple
  5. You should hear swallowing, not clicking

How Often to Feed

Newborns typically nurse 8–12 times per 24 hours. Watch for hunger cues: rooting, hand-to-mouth movements, and fussiness.

Common Concerns

  • "Am I making enough?": Count wet diapers β€” at least 6 per day by day 5
  • Engorgement: Apply warm compresses before feeding, cold after
  • Sore nipples: Usually improves with better positioning and latch

When to Get Help

Lactation consultants can make an enormous difference. Many hospitals offer free consultations in the first weeks after birth.
