Prenatal Vitamins: What to Take and When to Start

A guide to essential prenatal nutrients including folic acid, iron, and DHA for a healthy pregnancy.

Prenatal Vitamins: What to Take and When to Start

Healthcare providers recommend starting prenatal vitamins at least one month before trying to conceive, ideally three months prior.

Folic Acid (400–800 mcg)

This B vitamin is critical for preventing neural tube defects. The neural tube forms in the first 28 days — often before you know you are pregnant.

Iron (27 mg)

Pregnancy increases blood volume by about 50%. Adequate iron prevents anemia and supports oxygen delivery to the baby.

DHA (200–300 mg)

This omega-3 fatty acid supports fetal brain and eye development, particularly during the third trimester.

Calcium & Vitamin D

Calcium (1,000 mg daily) supports bone development, while vitamin D (600 IU) aids calcium absorption.

Always consult your provider before starting any supplement regimen.
