Morning Sickness: Causes, Remedies, and When to See a Doctor

Practical strategies for managing pregnancy nausea, from dietary changes to when medication may help.

Morning Sickness: Causes, Remedies, and When to See a Doctor

Despite the name, pregnancy nausea can strike at any time of day. It typically begins around week 6 and improves by weeks 12–14.

Why It Happens

Rising hCG and estrogen levels are believed to trigger nausea. An enhanced sense of smell during pregnancy can worsen it.

Remedies That Help

  1. Eat before you rise: Keep crackers by your bedside
  2. Small, frequent meals: An empty stomach worsens nausea
  3. Ginger: Ginger tea, candies, or capsules have anti-nausea properties
  4. Vitamin B6: 25 mg three times daily (ask your doctor first)
  5. Acupressure wristbands: Some women find relief from wrist pressure points
  6. Stay hydrated: Sip water or clear broths throughout the day

When to Seek Help

Contact your provider if you cannot keep down any food or liquid for 24 hours, lose weight, or show signs of dehydration. Severe nausea (hyperemesis gravidarum) affects about 1–3% of pregnancies and may require medical treatment.
