Your Anatomy Scan: What Happens at 20 Weeks
The mid-pregnancy ultrasound is one of the most important — here is what your sonographer checks.
The anatomy scan, typically performed between weeks 18–22, is a detailed ultrasound that evaluates your baby's development.
What the Sonographer Examines
- Brain: Structure and ventricle size
- Heart: All four chambers and major vessels
- Spine: Alignment and closure
- Kidneys: Size and function
- Limbs: Bones, hands, and feet
- Placenta: Position and health
- Amniotic fluid: Volume assessment
Gender Reveal
If baby cooperates, the sonographer can often identify the sex. Let them know beforehand if you want to know or keep it a surprise.
3D/4D Keepsake Scans
While the anatomy scan is medical, many parents also book a separate 3D/4D keepsake ultrasound between 27–32 weeks for detailed face portraits. These sessions are designed for bonding rather than diagnostics.
The anatomy scan is usually the longest ultrasound of your pregnancy, taking 30–45 minutes.
