HDlive, 5D, 6D, Crystal Vue, 8K, 10K: What Each Ultrasound Studio Term Actually Means

TL;DR — Two very different things are marketed with similar names. Scanner rendering (HDlive, Crystal Vue, Realistic View, SRI) shapes how the machine draws data it actually captured. AI post-processing (8K, 10K, HyperReel, Flix10K, Hyper-Real) generates a new picture from a scan after the appointment. Neither is a resolution standard.

Manufacturer technology names were checked against GE HealthCare and Samsung Healthcare public product material on September 9, 2026. Terms that come from the ultrasound machine

These are rendering features built into the scanner. They work on data the transducer actually captured during your scan.

• HDlive / HD Live / HDlive Studio — a GE HealthCare Voluson rendering technology that uses a movable virtual light source to add depth and shadow to a 3D/4D volume.
• HDlive Silhouette — a GE rendering mode that makes outer tissue semi-transparent so internal structures show through.
• SRI (Speckle Reduction Imaging) — a GE image-processing filter that reduces the grainy speckle pattern typical of ultrasound.
• Crystal Vue — a Samsung volume-rendering technology that increases contrast between tissue boundaries.
• Realistic View / RealisticVue — a Samsung rendering technology that applies light-source modelling to 3D volumes.
• 5D — used by Samsung as a family name for automated measurement and rendering tools, and used far more loosely by studios to mean "our nicest 3D/4D render".
• 6D — not a manufacturer standard. Studios use it as a step above whatever they call 5D.

None of these numbers describe pixels. There is no 5D or 6D imaging dimension; the ultrasound machine acquires a 3D volume and 4D adds time.

Terms that come from AI software after the scan

These labels describe software that takes a finished scan image and generates a new, smoother, more photo-like picture. The output is produced by a model, not captured by the probe.

• 8K ultrasound, 8K Upgrade, 8K Enhancement, 8K Image Enhancement, 8K Realistic View, 8K Real View, True Look 8K, TrueView 8K — different studio and vendor names for AI post-processing of a 3D/4D still.
• 10K HyperReel, Flix10K, 10K Hyper Realism — the same category with a higher number in the name.
• Hyper-Real, Hyperrealistic, Photorealistic, Real View — descriptive marketing for the same class of output.

Across 162 studio sites we reviewed, 8K was the most common label, followed by HD Live and 5D. The number in an AI label is a product name. It is not a measured resolution, and no scanner in elective use captures an 8K-resolution fetal image.

What this means when you book

Ask two questions and the marketing sorts itself out.

1. Does this come from the machine during my scan, or from software afterwards? Scanner rendering shows what was captured. AI output is a new image generated from it.
2. Can I see the result before I pay? A preview-first flow lets you judge the generated picture rather than the label.

AI output may add, alter, or infer skin, eyes, hair, and lighting. It cannot recover anatomy the scan did not capture, and it must not be used for diagnosis or any clinical decision. Treat every enhanced image as a keepsake.
