5 Common Myths About Keepsake Ultrasounds (Is it safe? Is it accurate?)

TL;DR β€” FDA guidance discourages ultrasound exposure performed solely to create non-medical fetal keepsake images or videos. A keepsake session does not replace prenatal care. Discuss questions with your prenatal clinician and evaluate the purpose, operator training, exposure practices, local rules, and referral process before booking.

Facts checked September 8, 2026 against FDA ultrasound imaging guidance. This is general information, not medical advice.

Question 1: Is ultrasound the same as ionizing radiation?

No. Diagnostic ultrasound uses sound waves, not ionizing radiation. That distinction does not mean unlimited or unnecessary exposure is risk-free. The FDA recommends prudent use and discourages scanning solely for non-medical keepsake images or videos.

Question 2: Can a keepsake scan replace a medical ultrasound?

No. A non-diagnostic session does not assess fetal health or replace imaging ordered and interpreted by qualified clinical professionals.

Question 3: Does a longer or repeated session automatically produce a better image?

No. Image quality depends on many factors, and extending exposure solely to obtain a preferred pose should not be treated as harmless. Ask how the operator limits time and intensity and what happens when the desired view is unavailable.

Question 4: Is a 3D image a guaranteed preview of newborn appearance?

No. Position, fluid, tissue, shadows, rendering, and any later AI processing affect appearance. AI-generated keepsakes may add, alter, or infer details and are not factual predictions.

Question 5: What should a studio explain before booking?

Ask about operator qualifications, non-diagnostic purpose, session limits, equipment maintenance, consent, privacy, refunds or rescans, and the process for directing a health concern back to clinical care. Check the applicable rules where the studio operates.
